Certified Nurse Aide: Certification and Recertification
The Certified Nurse Aide: Training, Certification & Recertification and Registration Program ensures that individuals meet both the state and federal requirements for a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and are on the Indiana Aides Registry. A certified nurse aide is an individual who works primarily in long-term care facilities or nursing homes. The CNA assists residents with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, or eating. A CNA works under the direct supervision of licensed practical nurse or registered nurse and can perform only procedures that are within the scope of practice for a CNA.

Nurse Aide Training and Waivers – Reminders and Updates
The waivers allowing personal care aide (PCAs) and temporary nurse aides (TNAs) issued under the public health emergency ended on July 1, 2022. If former PCAs and TNAs are still working as nurse aides, they should be enrolled in a 105 hour approved nurse aide training program and working toward completing their training, testing and getting placed on the Aides Registry.
IDOH was notified by CMS on 9/29/2022 of approval of our statewide waiver request for NATCEP to allow more time to certify nurse aides beyond the deadline of Oct. 6, 2022 and beyond the usual 120 day requirement. The approval of this waiver is valid until the end of the PHE or March 29, 2023, whichever comes first. This waiver was granted due to testing capacity issues. IDOH and Ivy Tech are implementing a plan to increase testing capacity. Even with this approved waiver, there should be no delay in attempting to get nurse aides trained and tested promptly. There are no capacity issues with training programs, and if testing is delayed, the waiver allows the extra time needed for individuals to get scheduled for testing.
