FSSA Data and Analytics

Data gives us the chance to make great programs even better. The Data and Analytics team exists to help our FSSA divisions realize the full potential of data and improve program delivery. By compiling, analyzing and presenting FSSA’s immense data catalog in a clear and concise manner, Data and Analytics seeks to facilitate data-informed strategic decision-making that ultimately improves the health and wellbeing of Hoosiers.

No matter your level of familiarity with using data, the Data and Analytics team is dedicated to connecting you with the agency’s vast array of data-driven resources, tools, and subject matter experts.

Reports, dashboards and data

Data helps inform critical FSSA functions from policy decision support to state and federal compliance. Data is most often consumed in one of three formats:

  • Report - A static snapshot of data usually intended for a broader user audience. Completed on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis, reports often include analysis and contextual information that assists in the interpretation of the data.
  • Dashboard - An interactive visualization of data. Refreshed on a more frequent basis than reports, dashboards are helpful for intermediate users who can drill down to conduct basic analysis.
  • Raw Data - A data file extracted directly from a source system. While it regularly requires additional cleaning, raw data is often necessary for matching and in-depth analysis.

Tools and resources:

FSSA manages dozens of data-related tools that can help divisions search, analyze and visualize data. To help users explore the full catalog of tools and easily request access to relevant resources, Data and Analytics developed Data Central. Data Central showcases a variety of FSSA tools and offers a single form from which user can submit access requests.

Workshops and trainings:

Whether you are a newcomer to data looking to understand the basics of reading and interpreting reports, or you are skilled data analyst looking to keep up with the latest technology, the Data and Analytics team offers relevant and skill-appropriate content for you and your division.

Data governance:

Successful data use relies on a consistent and transparent framework of agency-wide policies and processes that govern how that data is collected, maintained, shared and applied. Known as data governance, this framework helps to ensure the timely sharing of data, establishes roles and responsibilities to improve the quality of data, and promotes the correct interpretation and application of data.

Culture and community:

Ultimately, data is about people – connecting, supporting and serving people. Beyond the technical work of connecting staff to data and data tools, the Data and Analytics team is also dedicated to empowering our people, fostering a sense of community, and contributing to a culture of inquiry across the agency.
