Physical Plant Maintenance

The maintenance program at Logansport State Hospital is organized to provide quality maintenance services throughout the facility.

Mission Statement

The mission of the maintenance department is to operate and maintain a high-quality physical environment to enhance patient comfort and safety.

We are a service organization dedicated to the success and satisfaction of LSH staff, patients, and visitors. Our responsibilities include maintenance, operation, and improvement of buildings, grounds and utility systems, and engineering support.

We set high service standards. We promote the personal growth of our staff through education and training.

We maintain a safe campus environment and we attempt to exceed governmental regulations. We conduct planning activities to achieve the most desirable future for our customers and our organization.

Department Description

The maintenance program is subdivided into three separate but closely related functional areas:

  • Safety/security department
  • Steam plant
  • Maintenance trades

The supervisor of each of these functions reports directly to the plant operations director and is responsible to him/her for all aspects of the program under their direction. Twenty-seven positions are assigned to the maintenance department, including the POD.

Safety/Security

This area, under the direction and supervision of the safety hazard manager, monitors all facets of the fire and safety programs being followed by the facility, to ensure that life safety codes, fire & building codes, and other codes and safety issues are followed and maintained in order to provide a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.

In addition, this department also maintains the SDS program for the entire hospital.

There are two positions assigned to this area.

Steam Plant

This area, under the direction and supervision of the steam plant supervisor, safely operates and maintains plant equipment and systems 24 hours per day 7 days a week to efficiently provide sufficient quantities of quality steam to ensure an adequate supply of heating steam and hot water to all buildings serviced. Five positions are assigned to this area.

Maintenance Trades

This area, under the direction and supervision of the maintenance supervisor, provides all preventive, routine, and emergency maintenance feasible, in an effort to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for patients, visitors, and staff throughout the facility.

This area is comprised of seven sections or sub-areas:

  • Carpentry
  • Electrical
  • Paint
  • Plumbing
  • Grounds
  • Repair

All of these sections report to a foreman serving as immediate supervisor of the section who reports to the maintenance supervisor. 19 positions are assigned to this area.

Scope of Services

  1. Provide preventive maintenance for electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and painting for the physical plant.
  2. Provide utilities, includes heat, water, electric, and sewage service, for the Physical Plant.
  3. Ensure grounds are clean, safe, and orderly throughout the year.
  4. Provide fire protection and prevention for the facility.
  5. Manage and coordinate capital improvements and repair projects for the facility.
