Evonik Builds Manufacturing Talent and Strengthens Community Through Upskilling

Evonik’s Tippecanoe Labs in Lafayette, Indiana, is transforming its workforce through a robust upskilling initiative designed to prepare employees for the future of manufacturing. Part of the Germany-based specialty chemicals company Evonik, Tippecanoe Labs is one of the world’s largest contract manufacturing facilities in the healthcare industry. The site employs over 650 people and specializes in producing active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates used in life-saving medicines.

While Tippecanoe Labs’ core mission focuses on pharmaceutical production, its broader vision extends to cultivating a skilled and future-ready workforce. This vision inspired the launch of the Evonik Manufacturing Partnership Program, a new apprenticeship initiative developed in collaboration with Greater Lafayette Commerce, Ivy Tech Community College, and other local industry partners.

The program, which officially welcomes its first cohort in January, combines classroom instruction with hands-on experience. Participants are full-time employees from day one while completing a 15-month curriculum covering math, chemistry, and manufacturing fundamentals at Ivy Tech. The goal is to equip individuals entering the industry for the first time with the tools they need to succeed and grow at Evonik.

“I am excited about this apprenticeship because it offers clear opportunities for advancement and professional development,” said Amy Corbin, a member of the first cohort of the Evonik Manufacturing Partnership Program at Evonik’s Tippecanoe Labs. “Evonik has an excellent reputation, and the role aligns with my interest in STEM and my personal values, allowing me to make a meaningful impact by contributing to the production of ingredients for life-saving medicines.”

The apprenticeship program represents a shift in Evonik’s hiring strategy. Traditionally, the company focused on recruiting experienced industry professionals. However, with Indiana’s economic growth and increasing competition for skilled labor, Evonik recognized the need to expand its talent pipeline by tapping into a broader hiring pool ─ including recent high school graduates and career changers.

“The biggest benefit for us is that the apprenticeship program expands our talent pipeline,” said Todd Wetli, Tippecanoe Labs Site Manager. “Launching this program allows us to bring in less experienced individuals who will grow and mature with us.”

The impact extends beyond workforce development. The program has sparked pride and engagement among current employees, many of whom are now encouraging friends, family, and community members to apply. Additionally, it helps Evonik strengthen its ties to the Greater Lafayette community by offering meaningful career opportunities and fostering a culture of growth and inclusion.

Todd Wetli encourages other manufacturers to consider apprenticeship programs. “Companies should start by identifying the key challenges their workforce faces and aligning training and development efforts with their long-term goals,” he said. He highlighted successful models abroad, noting that Europe has long embraced apprenticeship programs to prepare individuals for skilled careers from an early age.

Evonik’s approach demonstrates that upskilling is not just about filling roles ─ it’s about building careers, strengthening communities, and preparing for the future of manufacturing.
