Disabled Veteran Property Tax Deduction

Indiana Code 6-1.1-12-13

What is the Benefit?
$24,960.00 may be deducted from the assessed value of the veteran’s primary Indiana residence.

*Some recipients may qualify for a combination of both deductions. See “Code Combination” for details

Who Might be Eligible?
  • Indiana Veteran who served in the Armed Forces during a wartime period:
KOREAJune 27, 1950 - January 31, 1955WWIIDecember 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946
GULF WARAugust 2, 1990 - PresentVIETNAMAugust 5, 1964 - May 7, 1975 OR November 1, 1955 -August 4, 1964 (Must have been serving in country for this period)
  • Received an honorable discharge
  • Has a service-connected disability rating of 10% or more as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
  • Surviving spouses of eligible veterans as described above

How to Apply:

Apply at the county auditor’s office where the property is located.  Please see your State or County Service Officer if you need assistance.

Documents Needed:

  • State Form 12662 Application for Tax Deduction for Disabled Veterans and Surviving Spouses of Certain Veterans
  • Annual VA Summary or Tax Abatement letter that shows service dates and combined rating, including a second page listing of wartime dates OR
  • State Form 51186 - Certificate of Eligibility- Disabled Veteran Tax Deduction: Completed and signed by IDVA or County Veteran Service Officer after dates of service, discharge type, and disability rating are verified by the service officer.

What is the Benefit?

$14,000.00 may be deducted from the assessed value of the veteran’s primary Indiana residence.

*Some recipients may qualify for a combination of both deductions. See “Code Combination” for details

Who Might be Eligible?

  • Indiana veteran who served in the Armed Forces for at least 90 days
    • Received an honorable discharge
    • Has a total disability OR is over 62 years old and has at least a 10% VA disability rating
    • The assessed value of the home is under $240K as described in Indiana Code 6-1.1-12-14.
  • Surviving spouses of:
    • Eligible veterans as described above
    • Service member who was killed in action
    • Service member who died while serving on active duty
    • Service member who died while serving on inactive duty training

Code Combination

What is the Benefit?

$38,960.00 may be deducted from the assessed value of the veteran's primary Indiana residence.

Who Might be Eligible?

  • Veteran is eligible for the the $24,960 deduction (Honorable Wartime Service in the armed Forces of the United States and at least 10% Service Connected by the VA
  • Veteran is also eligible for the $14,000 deduction (Honorable service in the Armed Forces of the United States for at least 90 Days and  is over age 62 with a disability of at least 10%  or totally disabled at any age. )

    Notes:
    Applicant's property assessed value is under $240,000.
    Surviving spouses of eligible veterans, as described above, are also eligible.
