Impaired Driving

What is Impaired Driving?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration defines impaired driving as operating a motor vehicle while affected by alcohol and/or other drugs, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, or illicit substances.

About impaired driving

DRUGS

Drug-impaired driving is driving while using or having used any drugs that impair your ability to operate a car, including marijuana or prescription drugs. Even drugs prescribed to you by medical professionals can change your ability to drive, so make sure you are aware of all potential side effects.

ALCOHOL

The legal limit for blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is 0.08%. Over 14,000 Hoosiers were arrested for OWI in 2022.

PREVENTION

If you feel different, you will drive differently. The only acceptable way to drive is sober.

CONSEQUENCES

Anything that changes the way you think, act or feel will change the way you drive. An OWI conviction can lead to a suspended license, massive fines and, potentially, jail time.

IMPACT

Each year, countless lives are lost or forever changed due to impaired-driving accidents. Families are torn apart, and communities suffer the consequences. It’s not just about legal ramifications; it’s also about preventing needless tragedies and keeping our roads safe for everyone.
