The Criminal Intelligence Section is responsible for maintaining, analyzing and disseminating criminal information and intelligence to all members of the law enforcement community. The section is comprised of both law enforcement and civilian personnel.

The Criminal Intelligence Section is responsible for overseeing the Indiana State Police Violent Crime Analysis Program (ISP VICAP).
ISP VICAP is a computer-assisted program that operates in conjunction with the Federal Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VICAP) administered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. ISP VICAP collects, collates and allows analysis of crime information submitted by Indiana law enforcement. Originally designed for violent crimes (specifically homicide), ISP VICAP can be customized to allow collection of other types of crimes, such as arson, robbery or sexual assaults.
When crime patterns or similarities are identified, the Criminal Intelligence Section immediately notifies the appropriate law enforcement agencies in order that case investigators can be put in contact with each other.
