Rules for Public Meeting Livestreams and Recordings

Starting July 1, 2025, a new Indiana law (House Enrolled Act 1167) changes the way local governments, including townships, hold public meetings. The goal is to make it easier for residents to watch meetings, even if they can’t attend in person. This expands Indiana's Open Door Law.

What the Law Requires

* Livestreams of Meetings: Township boards, councils, and similar governing bodies must livestream their public meetings on a website or online platform that anyone can access.

* Recordings: Each meeting must also be recorded and kept online for the public to view.

* Archives: The recordings must stay available for at least 90 days after the meeting. After that, the township may remove them.

* Meeting Notices: Every official meeting notice must include the website address where residents can find the livestream and the archived recordings.

* If No Internet Is Available: If livestreaming is not possible because the meeting room does not have internet access, the township must still make a recording and post it afterward.

Why This Matters

These rules are designed to increase transparency and give residents more ways to stay informed about local government decisions. Even if you cannot attend a meeting in person, you will be able to:

*Watch live from your computer or phone.

*Re-watch the meeting later, for up to 90 days.

Technology Problems

If a livestream fails because of an unexpected technical issue, the meeting itself is still valid. Township officials will do their best to restore service quickly, but business can still be conducted.
