History of the Swayzee Police Department

The Swayzee Police Department has a long-standing tradition of service and commitment to the safety and well-being of the residents of Swayzee, Indiana. Proudly known as the only town in the United States named “Swayzee,” our community is home to approximately 1,000 residents and covers roughly 0.59 square miles in western Grant County.

The department was formally established to meet the growing needs of the town as it expanded in population and infrastructure. While the exact founding date is not widely documented, local accounts and early town records reflect law enforcement activity dating back several decades to the late 1800’s. In its earliest days, law enforcement duties were often handled by a single town marshal who balanced a wide range of responsibilities—from responding to crimes and disputes to enforcing local ordinances and patrolling by foot or bicycle.

Over the years, the department has evolved with the times. From handwritten reports and basic radio systems to modern digital tools and mobile data terminals, the Swayzee Police Department has continuously worked to adapt its methods and equipment to better serve the public. Today, the department is staffed by dedicated officers, including a Town Marshal and Deputies, who work in close partnership with county and state agencies to ensure comprehensive public safety coverage.

Despite its small size, the department handles a wide variety of calls—from traffic enforcement and criminal investigations to community outreach and mutual aid support for surrounding jurisdictions. The department is proud to foster strong ties with the community and regularly participates in local events, safety education programs, and collaborative efforts that support both prevention and enforcement goals.

The Swayzee Police Department remains committed to serving with integrity, professionalism, and compassion, preserving the small-town values that make Swayzee a safe and welcoming place to live, work, and visit.
