Someone I care about may be suicidal
If you know or suspect someone has begun to think of suicide, it is important to recognize their thoughts for what they are: expressions of a treatable mental health crisis. Most suicides are preventable. Do not let shame or embarrassment stand in the way of taking lifesaving action now. Remember, suicide is a permanent solution to a problem that is temporary.
If someone you know or care about is thinking about death or suicide, do one of the following immediately:
- Encourage the person to contact a doctor;
- Take the person to the emergency room; or
- Have the person call 988, 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433).
Teens can text 988 or text CONNECT to 741741 to have a conversation with a trained crisis counselor via text message (24/7).
If someone is in immediate danger to themselves or others, call 911.
