Auctioneers Licensing Information

Application Instructions

  • General Information

    The Fair Information Practice Act:  In compliance with Ind. Code 4-1-6, this agency is notifying you that you must provide the requested information, or your application will not be processed. You have the right to challenge, correct, or explain information maintained by this agency. The information you provide will become public record. Your examination scores and grade transcripts are confidential except in circumstances where their release is required by law, in which case you will be notified.

    Mandatory Disclosure of U.S. Social Security Number: Your social security number is being requested by this state agency in accordance with Ind. Code 4-1-8-1 and 25-1-5- 11(a). Disclosure is mandatory, and this record cannot be processed without it. Failure to disclose your U.S. social security number will result in the denial of your application. Application fees are not refundable.

    Abandon Applications:  If an applicant does not submit all requirements within one (1) year after the date on which the application is filed, the application for licensure is abandoned without any action of the Board. An application submitted after an abandoned application shall be treated as a new application.

  • Auctioneer by Examination

    Applicants will be contacted by staff to schedule the exam once requirements have been met. The exam is given six (6) times a year at the Indiana Government Center South, 402 West Washington Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204.

    Submit the following with your online application:

    1. Application Fee: $70.00 application fee to be paid by credit or debit card for. All application fees are nonrefundable.
    2. Positive Response Documentation: If you answer "Yes" to any questions on the application, explain fully in a statement that includes all details. Include the violation, location, date, cause number, and disposition. Submit copies of court documents for each instance to support the statement.
    3. Name Change Documentation: Documentation of any legal name change if your name differs from that on any of your documents. Documentation may include a copy of your marriage certificate or divorce decree.
    4. Course Completion Certificate: Must be sent from a Commission approved pre-licensing course provider.
    5. Examination Application Fee: $35.00 examination fee to be paid by credit or debit card. All application fees are nonrefundable.
  • Application by Reciprocity

    Approved States for Reciprocity include:  Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia

    Submit the following with your online application:

    1. Application Fee: $70.00 application fee to be paid by credit or debit card.

    4. Verification of State Licensure(s): We need verifications of licensure for all states you are currently licensed or have been licensed. All verifications must be sent directly to us from the state.
  • Applicants for Registration of Auctioneer d/b/a

    Completed Application: State Form 43962 may be printed,  completed, and mailed to our office.  All sections must be completed and submitted.

    This form serves as the written notice required by statute of an exempt individual notifying the Commission of operating an auction company. Per IC IC 25-6.1-3-4 (j): An individual who wishes to operate an auction company, and who is exempt under subsection (a) from obtaining an auction company license, shall, not more than thirty (30) days before the date on which the individual begins to operate an auction company, notify the Commission, in a writing signed by the individual, that the individual is operating as an auction company or as more than one (1) auction company. The individual shall specify in such written notification the trade or business name, and the address of the principle place of business, of each auction company which the individual operates.

Facility Application Instructions

  • Auction Company

    Submit the following with your online application:

    1. Application Fee: $70.00 Pay by credit or debit card. All application fees are nonrefundable.
    2. Proof of Organizational Structure: Can be in the form of one of the following
      • Documentation from the Indiana Secretary of State;
      • a legal document prepared by an attorney;  and/or
      • a written, notarized agreement signed by all parties involved.
  • Pre-Licensing and CE Course Sponsor

    Submit the following with your online application:

    1. Course Instructor Information: Names and qualifications of all course instructors
    2. Course Materials: Copies of all course materials
    3. Sample Certificate of Completion

    All applications for providers must be approved by the Commission. Applications are reviewed only during regular meetings, so please plan accordingly.

Renewal Instructions

  • Active Renewal
    • Auctioneer and Auction Company licenses expire February 28th of every fourth year (2028, 2032, etc.).
    • Pre-Licensing and Continuing Education Course Providers expire February 28th every even year (2026, 2028, etc.)
    • Renewal fees can be verified on the fee schedule.
    • Auctioneers are required to obtain sixteen (16) hours of continuing education during each four year license period.

    Renewal notices are sent approximately ninety (90) days prior to the expiration date. License holders with valid email addresses on file will be emailed the renewal notice. Those who do not have valid email addresses on file will be mailed the license renewal notice; this notice is mailed to the address of record with the Commission. The Commission has no way of knowing whether or not a notice reaches its destination; therefore, when a notice has been emailed to a valid email address or mailed, the duty of the Commission has been performed.

  • Inactive Status

    If your license is in Inactive status, you can renew to Inactive status online. If you wish to change your Inactive status to Active, you must submit your renewal by mail along with proof of the required 16 continuing education credits. If you currently hold an Active license and wish to renew to Inactive you may renew online by selecting "Yes" when asked if you would like to put your license in Inactive status. When renewing to inactive status, you are not required to complete continuing education requirements. An auctioneer with Inactive status may not perform an act that requires an auctioneer license.

  • Activation of Inactive License

    To activate an Inactive License, please submit the following via your MyLicense One account using the Upload Additional Documentation action item:

    1. Completed Application - State Form 48911 All sections must be completed and submitted.
    2. Documentation:  Continuing Education Certificates of Completion
  • Waiver of CE Requirements

    To request a waiver of the continuing education requirements, please submit the following via your MyLicense One account using the Upload Additional Documentation action item:

    1. Completed Application: State Form 50947 All sections must be completed and submitted.
    2. Documentation: Any supporting documentation (Doctor statements, etc.)
  • Reinstatement

    If your license has been expired for four or more years, you must reinstate your license to practice.

    Please submit your reinstatement online with the following:

    1. Reinstatement Fee: Pay the current renewal fee ($70) and the current initial application fee ($70) for a total of $140, plus additional processing fees.  All fees are nonrefundable.
    2. Work History: Letter of work history detailing your employment and/or type of work done since your license expired.
    3. License Verifications: Verification of any license in another state.
    4. Continuing Education: Proof of Continuing Education for the past two years from the date of your reinstatement application.
  • Continuing Education

    Sixteen (16) hours of continuing education from a Commission approved course provider are required during the four (4) year licensure period ending February 28 of every fourth year.

    At least six (6) hours of courses in any of the following core subjects:

    • Indiana rules and statutes governing auctioneering
    • Federal statutes governing auctioneering
    • Auctioneering ethics
    • Escrow and trust funds
    • Contracts
    • Any other subject matter approved by the Commission

    When more than six (6) hours of core subjects have been earned, the licensee may count the excess hours towards meeting the ten (10) hours of elective subjects required.

    At least ten (10) hours of courses in any of the following elective subjects:

    • Agency
    • Business courses related to auctioneering
    • Auction management
    • Bid calling
    • Public speaking
    • Advertising
    • Specialty auction topics
    • Any other subject matter approved by the Commission.

    No more than eight (8) hours of continuing education may be acquired during one (1) day. However, instruction for an approved distance learning continuing education program may be more than eight (8) hours of instruction in a one (1) day course. A licensee who attends the same continuing education course more than once in the same four (4) year license period is entitled to continuing education credit for that course only once.

    Retention of Certificates
    It is the responsibility of each licensee to retain evidence to support the courses taken for a period of three (3) years after the end of the renewal period for which the renewal application is submitted and the continuing education hours are claimed to the Commission. These records should include one or more of the following:

    • Certificates of completion such as course attendance verification by sponsor, certificates of completion, or continuing education attendance history
    • Course outline or other evidence of course content
    • Other evidence of support and justification

    Credit for Course Instruction
    Continuing education credit may be granted to an individual for instructing an auctioneer continuing education course. One (1) hour of continuing education credit may be earned per one (1) hour taught. Not more than four (4) hours of continuing education credit accumulated in this manner may be applied toward CE requirements. Instructors of auctioneer continuing education courses may not receive credit for repeated courses.

    Exemption
    A licensee who is initially licensed in the fourth year of a renewal period or holds an "Inactive" license is exempt from the continuing education requirements.

    The Commission may grant a waiver for all or part of the continuing education requirements for the renewal period if the applicant was not able to fulfill the requirement due to hardship that resulted from any of the following conditions:

    • Service in the armed forces of the United States during a substantial part of the renewal period.
    • An incapacitating illness or injury.
    • Other circumstances determined by the Commission.

    Those requesting a waiver of continuing education should provide a detailed statement to our office prior to renewal.

    The Indiana Auctioneer Commission does not have a schedule of course offerings from any provider.  Please review the Approved Pre-Licensing and Continuing Education Providers section below and contact the provider directly for a course schedule and with any other questions.
