The existing on-site septic system must be inspected by a Miami County Certified Installer. (A list is available at the Health Department (PDF) and the Planning Commission)
The existing finger system must be located and marked. The fingers system cannot be in failure and must meet current Rule 410 IAC 6-8.1 (PDF) et al.
A septic Plan Review Submittal Form must be completed and signed by the certified installer (PDF).
A detailed drawing of the existing system and set-aside system along with the location of the well, septic tank, dose tank if applicable, distribution box, and fingers system shall be included with the completed form.
A soils analysis must be conducted in the area of the existing system and in another area to show there is sufficient space for system replacement.
The Environmental Health Specialist shall travel to the site and verify the accuracy of the existing on-site and the replacement diagrams.
A $25 permit fee must be paid at the time of issuance.
The following is an excerpt from Miami County On-site Sewage Disposal Ordinance 10 9, 2000A Sec 7. B. Connection to an existing soil absorption system shall be permitted if the following conditions are met:
- The connection will not exceed the system design load based on the sizing requirements of 410 IAC 6-8.1 (PDF) or 410 IAC 6-10 (PDF).
- The existing system has not malfunctioned.
- The existing system has been permitted and approved by the Health Officer, and the applicant has possession of a record of the permitted and approved system which shows all system dimensions.
- If the existing system shall fail, there is sufficient space for system replacement.
- In the event that a system enlargement is proposed, the enlargement must bring the existing system into compliance with the minimum standards of 410 IAC 6-8.1 (PDF)
- All fees have been paid ($25)
The environmental health specialist may issue a permit if the above conditions are met.
