Biographical Note:

Robert C. Baltzell was born on August 15, 1879, in Lawrence County, Illinois. He moved to Indiana by 1903. Baltzell practiced law in Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana, from 1904 to 1921 excluding his military service during World War I (1917-1919). In 1921, he became judge of the Gibson County Circuit Court. Baltzell left the circuit court in 1925 to become judge of the U.S. District Court in Indianapolis. He held this position until his death on October 18, 1950. Baltzell was also active in Republican Party affairs.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection includes the contents of four scrapbooks documenting Baltzell’s career, particularly as a federal judge presiding over murder, bootlegging, and other cases, including the murder trial of George W. Barrett for killing an FBI agent (1935-1936). Also included is a notebook listing his cases with names of jurors and trial outcomes (1932-1935).
