Centennial Indiana
In 1916, Indiana celebrated its 100th anniversary as a state. Throughout Indiana, counties, cities, towns, and organizations developed pageants and other projects to document the history of their communities, and to show the progress made over the decades.
Many of these pageants and histories shared common themes, such as the arrival of the pioneers, the removal of the Native Americans, the impact of wars, the importance of agriculture, and the development of industry. As Indiana prepares for its bicentennial celebration in 2016, the activities of 1916 provide a touchstone for the past and an opportunity to review how the state has changed.
About the Exhibit
This online exhibit was created from items in the manuscript and rare books collection. It was an outgrowth of a physical exhibit of anniversaries celebrated in Indiana created for Indiana Statehood Day, December 11, 2000.
The exhibit was curated by Jamie L. Bargeron, IUPUI public history intern for Fall 2000, under the direction of Andrea Bean Hough, Senior Subject Specialist for the Indiana State Library.
