Tell City IN

General Electric (GE) operated a manufacturing facility at 13th and Payne streets in Tell City from the 1940s through to 2005. During the time of GE’s operations here, it used and stored solvents at the facility as part of its manufacturing processes. GE also generated hazardous waste, which was stored on-site.

As a result of recent investigations, GE has found volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the ground water and soil at its facility. Through GE’s efforts to determine the nature and extent of this contamination, VOCs were found in ground water and soil gas beyond its property boundary.

Due to the facility’s history as a hazardous waste storage facility, the investigation and remediation of GE’s releases are being done under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action (CA) Program. IDEM is authorized to implement the CA Program within the State of Indiana, and IDEM’s Hazardous Waste Permit Section is overseeing implementation of the CA Program at the GE Tell City facility.
