The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) Food Protection Division has a produce safety team available with a variety of resources to assist produce growers to manage food safety risks and to help comply with the new federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule (21 CFR 112) regarding the Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing and Holding of produce for Human Consumption. The Produce Safety rule establishes, for the first time, science-based minimum standards for the safe production of produce, and went into effect on January 26, 2016. The rule is part of the FDA’s ongoing efforts to implement the FSMA.

With the mission of the IDOH Food Protection Division (FPD) being to promote and support a healthier and safer Indiana, the State of Indiana is committed to leading the building of a safer food supply chain system with industry members, to develop a food safety culture among the produce community, and to protect Hoosier's health by minimizing foodborne illnesses associated with the consumption of contaminated produce.

These items are supported by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of a financial assistance award U2FFD007404 totaling $1,787,200 with 100 percent funded by FDA/HHS.
