The number of trees of forest stands may indicate the stages of stand development and the site occupancy of forests. Determining stages of forest development aids assessment of the future growth or mortality of forest resources. As forests mature, the number of trees per acre should continue to decrease while average volume should increase to the point where tree mortality increases offsetting net growth.
The graph depicts the percent of total trees by each species and diameter class. For perspective, there are 291,781,000 live trees, 9,048,000 (3.1%) standing dead trees, and 689,500 (0.2%) trees removed.
