Forest sustainability is the art and science of managing forests in such a way to meet the needs of society and industry today while providing future generations a balance of a forest’s environmental, commercial, and recreational viability. Many factors are considered when making management decisions and may include wildlife habitat, wood production, watershed protection, and outdoor recreation opportunities. In order to be deemed sustainable, forest growth volume needs to be equal or exceed removals and mortality as monitored over the long-term for an entire forest system.
