Furbearer Registration Stations

Furbearer registration stations register and tag harvested river otters and bobcats as required by state and federal regulations.

Prior to in-person registration, the harvest should be reported to CheckIN Game. Be sure to bring your DNR Customer ID and CheckIN Game number with you to register your harvest. Pelts should be separated from carcasses before being brought to registration stations.

Bobcats and river otters must be registered in person within 15 days after the month of harvest. For example, if you trap a river otter on Dec. 20, you have until Jan. 15 to register it in person.

Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) tags are required by law before a legally harvested bobcat or river otter can be sold. This tag will be affixed to the pelt during the registration process. Tagging will be faster and more efficient if the carcass is partially thawed (for river otters), and the pelt is thawed with the eye hole accessible. Placing a small stick or other small cylindrical object through the eye after skinning helps ensure the tag can be easily inserted.

River otter carcasses are required to be turned in when registered for data collection by DNR. Keeping these carcasses cold or frozen before registering helps ensure important tissues are usable. Bobcat carcasses do not need to be turned in.
