Domestic Violence Support

May 15, 2020

Domestic violence can happen to anyone, regardless of income, age, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Laura Berry wants Hoosiers to know they are not alone, and she encourages those in a domestic violence situation to seek out help. If you suspect a friend or loved one is in a dangerous relationship, Laura provides tips for talking to them and urging them to get help.   Here are some trusted organizations you can reach out to if you are experiencing domestic violence:

  • Call Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence Hotline, 24/7: 800-332-7385
  • Text LOVEIS to 225222
  • Visit thehotline.org and click “Live Chat” to chat with a counselor.
  • Visit ICADVinc.org to find contact programs in your local community.
  • Call the Indiana Child Abuse Hotline at 800-800-5556.

If you are concerned about a friend or loved one, here are tips to keep in mind:

  • Let the survivor make the decision to take action.
  • Create a codeword or symbol that can trigger a call from you or to the police.
  • Make sure the lines of communication stay open.
  • Let them know you are there for them.
  • Be supportive.
