The first settler was in 1830, George Sumption for whom Sumption(s) Prairie is named after.
In 1832, John Greene for whom the township is named after settled in the area.
Greene Township was officially established as a township in 1836.
The township covers 34.57 square miles.
The well known Kankakee River runs along a good portion of the North/West border.
In the 2023 census the population was 2938.
