History and Service
The Galveston Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD) has a long and proud history of service in Cass County, Indiana, extending over eight decades. As a crucial element of the local public safety network, the GVFD operates as a dedicated volunteer service, protecting the Town of Galveston and surrounding townships.
The department’s history demonstrates a deep commitment to the community, with volunteers playing a key role in maintaining and upgrading their station, equipment, and training standards.
Personnel and Members
The GVFD is entirely staffed by volunteer personnel who provide fire suppression, emergency response, and rescue services. They actively work with the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association (IVFA) and are vital to maintaining the safety of the local area. They have a strong focus on protecting those who protect others.
Volunteer Focus: Like most of Indiana's fire service, the GVFD relies on dedicated community members who volunteer their time for training and emergency calls.
Recruitment Success: The department has successfully utilized statewide recruitment initiatives, hosting large community events (like a fish fry that attracted nearly 400 people) to engage and sign up interested volunteers.
Station Pride: The GVFD takes immense pride in its facility. Recent efforts have involved volunteers completing the renovation of their fire station themselves, showcasing their dedication both on and off the emergency scene.
Mutual Aid: The department routinely responds to major incidents and provides essential water support to nearby departments across Cass, Howard, and Miami counties, demonstrating regional cooperation.
Equipment and Apparatus
Apparatus: In a rural setting like Cass County, the GVFD's fleet is designed to handle both structural fires and the challenges of water supply. Their equipment is known to include tankers (tenders) for hauling water and various engine companies (pumpers) for fire attack.
Response Capabilities: The GVFD is equipped to fight fires, provide rescue services, and ensure emergency medical services support at incidents across the area.
Partnerships: The department often receives support during large-scale operations from organizations like the Howard County EMA (Emergency Management Agency) and other local fire departments.
Training: Galveston has recently invested in a local house to serve as training grounds for their fire fighters. This will give them real world scenarios to practice and sharpen their skills.
