Charlestown Township includes the city of Charlestown and some surrounding areas. It is in the central portion of Clark County. As of the 2020 census, its population was 15,146 and it contained 6,106 housing units. The township has a total area of 65.09 square miles (168.6 km2), of which 64.49 square miles (167.0 km2) (or 99.08%) is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2) (or 0.92%) is water. Tom Kendrick was re-elected Trustee in November 2022. He is presently serving his third term, having been first elected in November 2014. Tom is a 1978 graduate of Charlestown High School and a graduate of Indiana University Southeast. Tom has taught at Greater Clark Schools for 28 years. He has coached wrestling at New Washington and Charlestown since 1978 and has coached cross-country, track, and football at Charlestown. Tom owns and operates a small business, Nuisance Animal Services, which provides wildlife management and removal in Southern Indiana. Tom and his wife have two adult children.
The trustee is assisted by a three-member Township Board whose members are also elected to four-year terms. The duties of the board include adopting the annual budget, serving as a Board of Finance, and approving township contracts. In January of each year, the trustee presents to the board an annual report showing the receipts, expenditures, investments, and debts of the township. The approved report is then published in local papers for public inspection. The current Township Advisory Board consists of three Republican members: Robert Caudill, Dan Roberts, and Harold Goodlett, Jr.
