Building Safety

Building safety and security is a key element to keeping Indiana schools safe. Guidance from the Indiana State Police, Department of Education and the State Fire Marshal is critical to ensuring buildings are protected from intruders and individual classrooms have safeguards that can be implemented in the event of an emergency.

  • State Fire Marshal Guidance to Schools for Unplanned Fire Alarms

    Following the passage of HEA 1230 during the 2018 Indiana legislative session, the State Fire Marshal was directed to provide guidance to schools about options during unplanned fire alarms. Almost immediately, the State Fire Marshal released guidance and developed a webpage that can be updated as new technology rolls out and safety standards are updated.

  • Indiana Department of Education School Safety and Security Guidelines

    The Indiana School Safety Specialist Academy will provide ongoing, certified training and information on national and state best practices, as well as exemplary resources for school safety, security, intervention/prevention, and emergency preparedness planning. School safety specialists will be trained to lead the development and implementation of school safety practices which will provide safe educational environments for all students in Indiana.

The guide outlines action-oriented security practices and options for consideration based on the results of the individual school’s responses to a survey. While the primary audience for the Guide is the K-12 community, institutions of higher education or pre-K schools may also benefit from the information presented.

    DHS has developed a Soft Target and Crowded Places Security Plan Overview, which is meant to provide interested members within the public and private sector—including representatives from industry; academia; associations; state, local, tribal and territorial governments; law enforcement; faith based communities; non-governmental organizations; and international partners—with an overview of the Plan through which the Department is coordinating its mission to enhance the security and resilience of ST-CPs across the United States.
