The Vital Records Section of the Spencer County Health Department started keeping records in February of 1882. There are no records in Indiana before that time. The Indiana State Department of Health in Indianapolis started keeping records in October of 1907.
Hours
Records can be obtained from our office on:
- Walk in basis
- Monday through Friday (except legal holidays)
- 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Identification
Indiana requires an applicant requesting a birth or death certificate, whether by mail or in person, be required to show one form of identification containing the applicant's signature. A driver's license or a state issued identification card is preferred. However, if these are unavailable, you may use a tax return, social security card, fishing license or credit card. Mail orders must include a photo copy of your driver's license or state issued identification card.
Cost
- Certified copies of birth certificates are $10 each.
- Certified copies of death certificates are $10 each.
- Counter checks are not accepted.

- If I come into your office, can I get my certificate today?
No! Please fill out the application in its entirety, enclose the fee and a copy of your drivers license. Please also include a self addressed stamped envelope.
- Do I have to show an ID to get a copy of a birth or death certificate?
Yes, something with your signature and photo if possible.
- How long does it take to get a copy of a certificate through the mail?
Please allow at least 7 business days to receive your certificate. Our office usually turns all mail requests around in 3 to 5 business days after receipt.
- Do you have marriage and divorce records?
No, copies of these records can be obtained from the Spencer County Clerk's Office:

- If I was born in another county or state can I get a copy of my birth certificate?
No, this office registers and issues Spencer County birth records only. Each county in Indiana has its own Vital Records Section.
- Can I get a social security card at your office?
No, social security numbers/cards can only be issued by the Social Security Agency. Please contact the Social Security Office nearest you.
