Blood Drives

MCHD & SBMF

The Marshall County Health Department is honored to be a proud partner of the South Bend Medical Foundation (SBMF) in its mission to save lives through blood donation. Every 56 days, we host Marshall County Blood Drives to ensure that our local hospitals and patients have the lifesaving blood they need.

Make a Difference – Donate Blood

Blood donations are essential to maintaining a stable and adequate blood supply for hospitals and medical centers. Each donation has the power to save multiple lives, helping trauma patients, surgical patients, those undergoing cancer treatments, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

By donating, you’re directly impacting the well-being of your community. Plus, each donor gets the chance to win amazing prizes as a thank-you for their generosity and commitment to saving lives.

Blood Drive FAQs

  • What should I bring when donating blood?
    1. A valid photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport).
    2. Your blood donor card (if you have one).
    3. If you are under 18, a signed parental consent form may be required.
  • How should I prepare for blood donation?
    1. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water before and after your donation.
    2. Eat a healthy meal: Avoid fatty foods before donating, as they can affect blood tests.
    3. Get a good night’s rest: Being well-rested helps you feel your best before donation.
    4. Avoid alcohol and caffeine: These can dehydrate you and make the process more difficult.
  • Who can donate blood?

Most healthy individuals 16 years or older (with parental consent) or 17+ years without consent can donate. Donors must be over 110 pounds. However, eligibility may be affected by certain medical conditions, recent travel, or medications. If you’re unsure, visit the South Bend Regional Medical Foundation’s website or speak with a healthcare professional.

  • What happens after I donate?

After your donation, you’ll be given snacks and a drink to help replenish your energy. You should also take it easy for a few hours and avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities.

  • How often can I donate?

You can donate whole blood every 56 days (about eight weeks). If you’re donating platelets or plasma, the waiting period may be shorter.
