2023 Communication Unit (COMU) Classes

Communication Unit Leader (COML)

June 12-16

LOCATION: IPSC Communication Technical Center - 128 South Park Blvd., Greenwood, IN

The Communication Unit Leader (COML) is responsible for creating a communications plan, setting up a communications center, and establishing field communications for events and incidents. COMLs are also responsible for managing and supervising communication personnel, distribution & accountability of communication equipment and maintaining deployed assets.
Prerequisites: A public safety background with experience in field operations; Awareness of fundamental public safety communications technology; Basic knowledge of applicable communications plans; IS-100 IS-200 IS-700 IS-800 IS-300. Recommended: IS-400.

Communication Unit Technician (COMT)

August 14-16

IPSC Communication Technical Center - 128 South Park Blvd., Greenwood, IN

The Communication Unit Technician (COMT) is responsible for for the installation and maintenance of communications equipment for events and incidents. The COMT reports to the Communication Unit Leader (COML)  and assists in designing communication systems to meet incident operational needs. The COMT may be asked to assist with radio, telephone, repeater and satellite communications.

Prerequisites: A public safety background with experience in field operations; Awareness of fundamental public safety communication technology; Basic knowledge of applicable communication plans; IS-100  IS-200 IS-700 IS-800.

Auxiliary Communication (AUXC)

September 9-10

The Auxiliary Communication (AUXC) provides emergency communication during  an event or incident where other public safety communication methods have failed or are severely disabled. The AUXC reports to the Communication Unit Leader (COML) and assists in setting up auxiliary communication nets to meet functional needs of the communication unit.

Prerequisites: Must hold a current FCC Amateur Radio License (any class); must present a letter of sponsorship from a Public Safety Agency verifying your affiliation to the agency;  IS-100 IS-200 IS-700 IS-800
