Graduate Engineer Development Program

We’re looking for entry-level civil engineers who aren’t done learning, who want to start their career by contributing to the bigger picture. Does that sound like you? If so, we’re looking for you!

INDOT’s Graduate Engineer Development Program (GEDP) is a one-year Indianapolis-based rotational program that focuses on developing technical problem-solving and leadership skills. Engineers will spend time in each of INDOT’s engineering departments and upon completion of the program, will transition into their choice of assignment at INDOT; based on availability of positions, supervisor assessments, and the engineer’s preference. The goal of the GEDP is to support the engineer’s ability to learn as much about on-the-job civil engineering as possible, as well as fostering professional development and connecting the engineer with 100s of people at INDOT. The GEDP is designed for INDOT’s future leaders.

Fun Stuff We Get to Do!

  • Opportunity to attend GEDP events with current and alumni of the program (ex. Construction Showcase, Trivia, Annual Canoe Trip, and more).
  • Participate in trainee meetings to exchange information, share unique experiences, and provide ongoing assessment of the development program.
  • Participate in Toastmaster’s to develop speaking skills.
  • Matched up with an engineering mentor.

What we’re looking for:

  • Individuals who value Learning, Development, and Diversity/Inclusion.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited school.
  • Engineers in the Beginning of their Career.

Our Priority:

INDOT is committed to creating an inclusive employee experience for all.  Regardless of race, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability or parenting the next generation of innovators, we believe that our work is at its best when everyone feels free to be themselves.

Virtual Work:

As with many businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, INDOT has had to adjust our work culture to fit the changing landscape. Virtual work is no exception to this. While the program had minimal virtual work prior to the pandemic, we have fully embraced this type of work. While you certainly will not be fully virtual (here’s looking at you construction!), we do have a hybrid schedule where field work and virtual work coexist effortlessly. While learning, development, and diversity/inclusion are always our main values and priority, your safety no less a priority for us.

Testimonials:

Meagan – Hydraulics Engineer:

There are so many great opportunities that come with participating in the GEDP. Take advantage of them!!! You’ll get the opportunity to meet and network with a huge amount of people throughout the state (both INDOT and non-INDOT people) and see and learn about engineering-related things you wouldn’t get the opportunity to see and learn about otherwise. Also, take the time to get to know your coworkers. They become your work family, and you can gain some lifelong friends!

Nathan – Construction Engineer:

As a GEDP, you have the ability to explore INDOT for an entire year. Push the limits and think of things you want to see that aren't exactly listed in the agenda. Some of the most fun and best learning opportunities came from things my GEDP group visited that weren't originally part of the rotation schedule.

Ethan – Design Engineer:

I had the opportunity to explore all parts of INDOT and network with hundreds of different employees. The GEDP allowed me to try different career paths that I never thought I would have previously picked. It proved that school is a lot different than the real world and not to rule something out just because it wasn’t your favorite topic in college.

Cristy – Bridge Inspection Engineer:

Everyone was very willing to teach me something, everyone tried their best to give the best quality experience with their department. INDOT employees are really the nicest and most helpful for those just coming from school. The support from everyone at INDOT is very welcoming and comforting going through this year.

Rotational Areas:

Construction, geotechnical, hydraulics, materials management, multi-modal, traffic engineering, traffic management, bridge inspection, pavement, construction management, design, bridge design/rehab and inspection, planning, real estate, construction, and design/survey.

After the Program

After completing the Graduate Engineer Development Program, participants will work with the GEDP Coordinator to find a permanent assignment at INDOT in the location and career path that’s right for them and INDOT.

For more information regarding the Graduate Engineer Development Program watch the video or look at photos in the Media Room, read what employees have to say about the program, or read the rotation descriptions.
