Write an Offender

IMPORTANT NOTICE: In order to impede the introduction of contraband and prohibited property into its facilities, the Department is requiring all facilities to copy general correspondence (i.e., not Legal Mail or Privileged Correspondence as defined in Policy and Administrative Procedure 02-01-103).  All general correspondence, including educational and religious mail shall be copied by the facilities’ mail rooms.  Offenders shall not receive originals of these documents. To write to an offender, you need the offender's name and DOC number and the name and address of the correctional facility where they are housed. You can look up an offender's DOC number and location on the IDOC website here. IDOC correctional facility addresses are also available online here.

Address both the letter and envelope as follows:
Offender name, DOC#
Facility name
Street Address or PO Box
City, IN ZIP code

All incoming and outgoing mail is opened, examined, and read by designated facility staff.

Mail & Packages

Offenders may receive correspondence, legal mail, and publications from publishers only, which are reviewed to determine whether they are obscene or constitute a danger to safety and security.
