U.S. Steel, as part of a settlement of an enforcement action, United States et al. v. U. S. Steel Corp., will perform water quality sampling at each of the seven sampling locations below on a monthly basis from October 1 through April 30. From May 1 through September 30, U.S. Steel will perform water quality sampling on a weekly basis for locations 5-7 and twice weekly for locations 1-4.
The sampling locations are:
- Burns Ditch
- Burns Ditch / Lake Michigan Mixing Zone
- Kemil Beach
- Indiana Dunes Beach – Western Area
- Michigan City
- Vicinity of American Water Intake – Gary
- Vicinity of American Water Intake – Ogden
At each location, U.S. Steel will sample for hexavalent chromium, total chromium, cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), E. Coli, pH, total suspended solids, temperature, and transparency.
