Youth tobacco access (Synar)

Synar is a federal program to reduce tobacco access and availability to minors. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration requires states to create and enforce laws prohibiting the sale or distribution of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18, commit to annual tobacco retailer checks, and submit an annual report about enforcement of this program. Indiana maintains a Synar advisory committee that meets quarterly to ensure that Indiana continues to educate and enforce consistently around youth access to tobacco. This committee has representation from the Indiana State Department of Health tobacco prevention and cessation commission, Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission, Indiana Food and Fuel Association, Prevention Insights, and Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.”

Youth can sign up to assist with Synar inspections.
