Mental Health and Addiction Treatment Providers

The intent of this page is to provide options for individuals who are seeking mental health and/or addiction treatment service options and housing needs should an individual need a place to stay while going through addiction treatment and recovery.

Indiana has 24 Community Mental Health Centers certified by the Division of Mental Health and Addiction. These agencies provide a wide array of behavioral health and addiction services for adults, adolescents, and children. DMHA & Indiana’s Council for the Community Mental Health Centers share a goal to improve the lives of Hoosier citizens suffering from behavioral health and addiction diseases.

A Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic is a specially designated clinic that provides a comprehensive range of mental health and addiction services and be in compliance with the state’s criteria, developed by the Division of Mental Health and Addiction. CCBHCs serve all that walk through their door, regardless of their diagnosis, insurance status, place of residence or age. The CCBHC model is a proven outpatient model that:

  • Ensures access to high quality behavioral health care, including 24/7 crisis response.
  • Meets strict criteria regarding access, quality reporting, staffing, and coordination with social services, justice, and education systems.
  • Receives funding to support the real costs of expanding services to fully meet the need for care in communities.

Recovery Residence is an umbrella term that includes a range of alcohol and drug free living environments, including recovery homes and sober living homes, that use peer support and other supportive services, to promote addiction recovery.

The Division of Mental Health and Addiction maintains and oversees the standards of excellence for recovery residences in Indiana.

There are four recovery residence levels. DMHA offers a designation for Levels II, III and IV.

An opioid treatment program is committed to the treatment of individuals with an opioid use disorder. Indiana opioid treatment centers are a network of outpatient providers that offer an array of medically supervised medication assisted treatment options for those who wish to overcome an addiction to or dependence upon opioids.

Opioid treatment is the dispensing of opioid treatment medication, along with a complete range of medical and rehabilitative services to any individual who has an opioid use disorder. This will ease the adverse medical, psychological or physical effects of opiate addiction.

Indiana opioid treatment programs have experienced and professional staff which includes doctors, nurses and counselors who work with clients to determine the most appropriate dosage of any medication prescribed and any additional therapeutic interventions that will further the recovery process. Individual and group therapy is provided at all Indiana opioid treatment programs in order to enhance the effectiveness of the medication assisted treatments that are offered.

Recovery Works focuses on pre-incarceration diversion services and post-incarceration re-entry services, which not only hopes to divert low-level offenders from incarceration to community services, but to reduce recidivism by 20% as well. Promoting recovery through community support and treatment/intervention is critical in reducing the number of persons with mental health and addiction disorders that are entering the criminal justice system.

  • Designed to provide support services to those without insurance coverage who are involved with the criminal justice system.
  • Dedicated to increasing the availability of specialized mental health treatment and recovery services in the community for those who may otherwise face incarceration.
  • Intended to supplement community supervision strategies to decrease recidivism.

Indiana’s State Psychiatric Hospitals serve many roles in their respective communities. They are inpatient treatment units for those who need an intensive level of treatment; they are excellent research facilities for students and professionals in the fields of mental health and addiction; and they are good neighbors in their community, adding to the local economy and culture. The state hospital system serves adults with mental illness (including adults who have co-occurring mental health and addiction issues, who are deaf or hearing impaired, and who have forensic involvement), and children and adolescents with serious emotional disturbances.
