Determine If Apprenticeship Is Right for Your Business
Start by identifying the challenges your organization faces that an apprenticeship program can address, such as:
- Difficulty filling positions requiring technical skills
- Losing critical knowledge due to an aging workforce
- Adapting to new technology that demands upskilling
- High turnover with limited advancement opportunities
Registered Apprenticeships are ideal for roles requiring at least one year of training, combining on-the-job learning with academic study.
Research and Prepare
To explore apprenticeship options, contact an Apprenticeship Representative to decide whether to join an existing program or create a customized one for your business.
An Apprenticeship Representative will guide you through the process, helping you address key questions such as:
- Which occupation should your apprenticeship program focus on?
- Who are the industry and subject matter experts to help design your program?
- What type of classroom training will complement your apprenticeship?
Design and Document Your Apprenticeship Program
An Apprenticeship Intermediary will work with you to design your program, ensuring it meets the U.S. Department of Labor’s approval standards. To build your apprenticeship program, you’ll need to outline key components such as core knowledge, curriculum, training plans, wage scale and supervision methods. These elements will be compiled into a “Standard of Apprenticeship,” the guiding document for your program.
Register Your Apprenticeship Program
After designing and documenting your apprenticeship program, submit your materials to the U.S. Department of Labor for approval. Once approved, you’ll receive additional resources to support your program’s success.

Lippert needed to find ways to continue to expand our operations and automate and innovate our products and our product lines. Looking at our existing workforce and our individual team members, we knew how hard it was to hire talent. We had to come up with a way so that we could upskill our existing team members who are already working for us or doing a great job. Registered Apprenticeship Programs were a great way to do this.”
Matt Jerlecki,
Director of Learning, Lippert -
The workforce challenge we were facing was having teachers coming to us with the education but not being able to implement what was being presented. The Registered Apprenticeship program has helped with that challenge to be able to hire the staff and to work with them hand in hand with on the job training starting with basics and moving into more advanced subjects such as communication and interactions with parents.”

Global Child Development Services Director, Cummins Child Development Center -
Endress+Hauser has several Registered Apprenticeship Programs. What we're really introducing the apprentice to is our culture. Culture is the number one reason you set up an apprenticeship. Because as you train an individual within your company, you're trying to bring them into your culture while giving them a valuable skill set you are needing. That is very key for Endress+Hauser.”
