The President Benjamin Harrison Conservation Trust (PBHCT) was established in 1992 as the Indiana Heritage Trust (IHT). As described in Indiana Code § 14-12-2, the purpose of the PBHCT is to ensure that Indiana's rich natural heritage is preserved for succeeding generations through the acquisition or protection of real property. The intent of the PBHCT is to protect land with outstanding natural features and habitats or that possesses recreational, historical, or archeological significance.
In 2016, the General Assembly unanimously passed a bill to rename the IHT in honor of President Benjamin Harrision.
PBCHT’s leadership in land conservation has helped the state and its partners invest more than $64 million to acquire more than 580 sites totaling 74,000 acres
How is the PBHCT Funded?
The PBHCT is primarily funded through the sale of the Environmental License Plate. For every Environmental plate sold, $25 goes directly toward the protection of Indiana’s land, waters and wildlife. Learn how to purchase the plate.
Additional funding for the PBHCT includes periodic appropriations by the General Assembly and private donations.

How are PBHCT projects selected?
Projects are submitted by DNR divisions or the State Museum and Historic Sites. The PBHCT Project Commission meets quarterly to review the submitted projects and make recommendations to the Governor for his approval. Project Commission Meetings and Minutes.
