William R. “Bill” Riggs, 71, 1424 W. Fifth St., Marion, died at 5 a.m.  Friday in his home.

Mr. Riggs was born in Fairmount. He was a life resident of the Marion area. He attended Marion schools and the National Sheriff’s Association Institute. He was an Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a retired Grant County sheriff. He was a Grant County Sheriff’s deputy for 20 years and was the first deputy to be elected sheriff. He owned and operated service stations in Marion before he joined the sheriff’s department. He was a member of the Moose and a member of American Legion Post 10, and a life member of the Indiana
Sheriff’s Association. He attended First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lovey; two sons, Robert (Linda) and Eddie Joe (Karen), both of Marion; a brother, Joseph O. (Donna), Sebring, Fla.; a sister, Mary (Early) Hobbs, Marion; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Owen Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home, 2722 S. Washington St., Marion, with the Rev. Darrel L. Parris officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Fairmount.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
