Department: Gas City Police Department
Job Title: Patrolman
Definition: A patrolman must work with and answer to the shift commander, who answers to the chief of the department. While on patrol, a patrolman must be able to make decisions by himself or herself. Good judgement is a must in law enforcement.
Equipment: Patrolmen are required to use various pieces of equipment to perform their duties, which includes but is not limited to, telephones, tape recorders, handguns, rifles, shotguns, tasers, radio equipment, radar, in-house department computers, police vehicles. He or she must be prepared to work outside in all weather conditions and be prepared for any type of physical confrontation that might occur while performing his or her duties.
Essential Function of the Job: Essential functions include timely processing of documentation generated by the public, either by complaint or arrest of violators, attend in-service training seminars to keep updated on all laws and court procedures, as required by the department. Patrolmen must be able to work hours as scheduled by the department.
Additional Examples of Work Performed: Patrolmen must have the ability to verbally communicate with the public when they require the needs of law enforcement, must be familiar with criminal law and traffic laws.
Qualifications: Candidates must have earned a high school diploma or GED equivalency. Candidates must be at least 21 years of age, but not older than 39 years of age, have good moral character, and must meet all mental and physical requirements set forth by the state board. Candidates must meet all requirements set by the Gas City Police Department which includes a physical agility test and a polygraph examination. A patrolman must attend and graduate from basic training at the Indiana Law Enforcement academy within one year of his or her appointment date.
