Lake County Library Recognized for Preparing Patrons for ACA

Putting the "e" in eHealthThe Lake County Public Library (LCPL) was recently recognized on WebJection article (Putting the "e" in eHealth) for the innovative they prepare patrons for success in the health insurance marketplace. In addition to providing general information sessions and comprehensive ACA resources for patrons, the library also provides computer classes on email essentials and the online application process. Debbie Rzepczynski is the Library Skills Trainer for LCPL, and intends to offer these services for the duration of the open enrollment period, which runs through March 31, 2014. Check out LCPL's ACA resources page for examples and ideas for online reference tools and adult programming. The eHealth page on WebJunction also has several archived ACA webinars which are free and very helpful resources to start getting prepared for assisting patrons with the health insurance marketplace. INSPIRE, Indiana's Virtual Library, recently added a resources portal for patrons and librarians designed to connect them with the latest information pertaining to the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

A Day of Learning Coming to Fishers Library on Jan. 8

Focus on Excellence: A Day of Learning at the Fishers Library Save the date for Focus on Excellence: A Day of Learning at the Fishers Library at the Hamilton East Public Library - Fishers Branch on January 8th. Earn up to five LEUs by attending any three of the following seven courses scheduled throughout the day:

  • Storytime Bootcamp: 9:00am-12:00pm
  • Affordable Care Act Overview and Resource Checklist: 9:30am-11:30am
  • Read out LOUD! Active Learning at the Library: 1:05pm-2:00pm
  • Weeding: 1:05pm-2:00pm
  • STEM for Libraries: 2:05pm-3:00pm
  • Storytime for Children with Disabilities: 2:05pm-3:00pm
  • Customer Service: 2:05pm-3:00pm

Indianapolis Unveils Unique Sister City Reading Campaign
Indianapolis Public Library recently kicked off its One Book-Two Cities project with the City Library in Cologne, Germany. The first-of-its-kind shared reading campaign that continues through February 2014 as part of the Sister City relationship between the two international cities. Both libraries are promoting the reading and discussion of Vienna by Eva Menasse.

PLA Seeks eLearning Interns for Spring Semester
This spring semester PLA will bring on three dynamic individuals to take on various responsibilities associated with PLA’s initiative, DigitalLearn.org, a digital literacy website. Working on DigitalLearn.org is a great opportunity to work on a national project impacting a diversity of libraries and nonprofits. Those selected to work on this project will receive a stipend of $500 per semester (January to April or May) for their efforts and will work about 5 - 10 hours a week. This opportunity is a virtual position and applicants can be from anywhere in the US. Click here for position descriptions and to apply.

IMLS Webinar Series Explores Immigration Resources for Librarians
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is set to host a series of four free webinars for public libraries about immigration and U.S. citizenship issues. The webinar series was developed as part of a broader effort through a federal partnership between IMLS and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to ensure that librarians have the necessary tools and knowledge to refer their patrons to accurate and reliable sources of information on immigration-related topics.

The first webinar, “Immigration and Naturalization 101,” will be conducted Thursday, December 12, 2013, from 10:30 a.m. to Noon EST. Click here for information on connecting to the webinar and information about future series webinars.

Summer Reading, Rock Star Training Coming to a Library Near You

Indiana State Library Children's Services Consultant Suzanne Walker has scheduled a statewide tour to discuss summer reading and Rock Star Start-Up kits. Attendees at any of the 17 statewide locations can earn up to five LEUs via the following workshops:

  • 2014 CSLP Training: Ages 0-12 (2 LEUs)
  • 2014 CSLP Training: Ages 13-Adult (2 LEUs)
  • Rock Star Training (1 LEU)

If you would like to attend one or both CSLP trainings on the same day as your Rock Star training, you must sign up for each training separately.
