Biographical Note:
Edward L. Jackson was born on December 27, 1873, in Howard County, Indiana. On February 20, 1897, he married Rosa Wilkinson with whom he had two daughters, Helen and Gertrude. After completing his law studies, he opened a practice in New Castle, Indiana. In 1898, he also entered the political arena. He served as Henry County prosecuting attorney (1903-1905) and was elected judge of the Henry County Circuit Court four years later.
In 1917, Jackson became Indiana Secretary of State, but resigned shortly after taking office to enlist in the U.S. Army. He returned to office in 1918 and served as Secretary of State until 1923. His wife, Rosa, died on October 29, 1919. On November 23, 1920, he married Lida B. Pearce. In 1924, Jackson was elected Governor of Indiana (1925-1929). His administration was plagued with scandals involving D. C. Stephenson and the Ku Klux Klan. After leaving office, he returned to private practice in Indianapolis. He retired in 1937, moving to a farm in Orleans, Indiana. In 1948, Jackson suffered a debilitating stroke and was bedridden until his death on November 18, 1954.

Scope and Content Note:
The collection contains various papers from Ed Jackson’s political career, including his time as Indiana Secretary of State and Governor. There are campaign speeches, a letter written to Governor Jackson by a prisoner, letters updating Jackson on the work of the State Department of Conservation, and other more biographical information gathered by Mrs. Jackson.
