Biographical Note:

Frederick Van Nuys was born on April 16, 1874, in Falmouth, Rush County, Indiana. He graduated from Earlham College (Richmond) in 1898 and the Indiana Law School (Indianapolis) in 1900. He practiced law in Shelbyville and Anderson, Indiana. Van Nuys served as prosecuting attorney of Madison County (1906-1910) and State Senator (1913-1916). In 1916, he moved to Indianapolis and continued to practice law. He then served as U.S. attorney for the district of Indiana (1920-1922). Van Nuys was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1932 and served until his death on January 25, 1944, near Vienna, Virginia.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection consists of various campaign materials regarding both Frederick Van Nuys and later campaigns. There is also a handwritten seed order to the Burpee Seed Company from Joseph Leisure of Rushville, Indiana.
