Biographical Note:

David William Henry was born on October 10, 1852, in Achor, Columbiana County, Ohio, to Jacob and Elvira Rowles Henry. His wife was Virginia Thompson, daughter of Richard Wigginton Thompson who was Secretary of the Navy under President Hayes. They had two children, Harriet and Richard.

Henry taught school sporadically until entering the Central Law School (Indianapolis). He graduated in 1881 and settled in Terre Haute where he began practicing law at the law office of Davis & Davis. He served as the prosecuting attorney for the 43rd Judicial Circuit from 1884 to 1888, after which he returned to general practice. Henry also served as judge of the Vigo County Superior Court from 1894 to 1897. After leaving the bench, he was appointed Collector of Internal Revenue. He was active in Republican politics throughout his career. Henry retired due to illness four years before his death on June 7, 1929.

Scope and Content Note:

The collection contains a letterbook with family and business correspondence for the years 1898 to 1900. The letters are not arranged chronologically in the book. There are also two lectures/articles written by Henry.

Some of Henry’s correspondents were George M. Allen, W. T. Durbin, Charles W. Fairbanks, David N. Foster, J. Frank Hanly, and J. A. Hemenway.

The collection is organized chronologically.
