Rev. 5/2010
The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) Rule 410 IAC 7-22, Certification of Food Handler Requirements certification requirement took effect January 1, 2005. The rule incorporates much of the language in IC 16-42-5.2 with a few additions for clarity.
The rule is examination based and does not include a training requirement as part of the rule. Many potential certified food handlers will be seeking out this information, so attached is a list of entities that offer training and approved examinations. This list will most likely change and we encourage you to refer to our website at http://www.in.gov/isdh/21059.htm for the most updated list available.
The Conference for Food Protection (CFP) has contracted with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to review organizations' programs and examinations to determine if they have qualifications to perform this function. There are three (3) organizations that are approved for certification through the ANSI process and an announcement has been made acknowledging that the 3 have passed and are recognized.
The attached list provides the names and contact information for the 3 accredited testing organizations and other organizations that provide training courses and that also offer one of the approved examinations. Local Health Departments (LDH's) may no longer require county certifications in addition or as a substitute for Rule 410 IAC 7-22.
Note to Certified Food Handlers: Original documents must be presented during inspections. To replace a lost Food Handler Certificate, contact the accredited organization through which you originally received your certificate. The ISDH does not retain copies of individual records.
