Transferring Resident License from One State to Another

Agents moving to Indiana from other states must satisfy all licensing requirements applicable to resident agents. However, if the new resident agent was licensed for the same line(s) of authority in the agent's prior resident state, the agent will be exempt from any pre-licensing education and examination requirements. The following are steps the agent must follow in order to apply for a new resident producer license in Indiana:

1.   CANCEL PREVIOUS RESIDENT LICENSE. Cancel previous resident license held in previous resident state. Indiana will verify on the national online producer database if the previous license has been cancelled. If the cancellation cannot be verified online, the agent will need to submit to IDOI a Letter of Clearance from the previous resident state showing that the license was cancelled. Note: the date of cancellation of the previous resident license must be no more than ninety (90) days prior to the date of application submission.

2.   APPLY FOR INDIANA RESIDENT LICENSE WITHIN 90 DAYS OF PREVIOUS LICENSE CANCELLATION. Apply for a new resident producer license in Indiana no more than ninety (90) days after cancellation of the previous resident license. The application may be done online through either or, or through the uniform NAIC paper application (paper application must be mailed to IDOI at the address below along with a $40 check or money order made payable to IDOI).
NOTE FOR AGENTS WITH ACTIVE NON-RESIDENT LICENSES IN INDIANA: A new resident applicant who has an active non-resident license in Indiana, must update the addresses on the non-resident Indiana license before submitting a new resident application. Information on updating contact information is available online at If the application is submitted through, the active non-resident license must also first be cancelled before submitting the application. Licenses may be cancelled through the IDOI Service Request Form. Once approved as a resident producer in Indiana, the agent will be issued a new resident license number and the non-resident license number will be inactivated.
