About Mothers in Transition: A Community Needs Assessment

The Indiana Commission for Women (ICW) is conducting a comprehensive research project titled Mothers in Transition.  This research project is a state-wide community needs assessment focusing on women living the transition into single motherhood whether that is by divorce, domestic violence, death of spouse, or any other circumstance.

Our mission at the Indiana Commission for Women is to understand the needs of Indiana women and their families and work strategically to help bring about positive solutions.  The results of this project will elucidate those needs, help inform policy, and open a productive dialogue to address the relevant concerns and challenges.

Goals of this Research Project:

1. To provide a voice for and clear picture of the varied experiences of women in transition into single motherhood.
2. To record and address needs and concerns that will guide best practices and evaluate the effectiveness of existing resources.
3. Identify community resources and find ways to mobilize them or make them more readily accessible to all women.

Method

Participants will be interviewed or participate in focus groups with the aim of discussing their lived experiences of single motherhood and the impact of that transition in three areas:

1. Economic Development
2. Physical Health
3. Emotional and Social Wellness

Research findings are scheduled to be released August 2011.  All information collected will be kept strictly anonymous.  The identitites of participants will be protected under a confidentiality agreement prior to participation.
