CALL FOR PAPERS
Hoosier Women at Work in the Arts // Indiana Women’s History Conference
Indianapolis // Friday, April 6, 2018
Join us for the third annual Hoosier Women at Work Conference on Friday, April 6, 2018, at the Harrison Center for the Arts in downtown Indianapolis. This year’s symposium will focus on the history of Indiana women in the arts. Art historian Abbey Chambers will deliver this year’s keynote address. Art exhibitions and a “First Friday” reception will follow the day’s events. We hope you will help us expand our knowledge of women’s work in these fields by submitting a paper or panel proposal. Please take note that this year’s conference will be held on Friday.
The arts are broadly defined for this conference and topics can include: women authors, poets, painters, ceramicists, glass workers, printmakers, curators, musicians, directors, actors, photographers, filmmakers, chefs, dancers, fashion designers, interior designers, architects, cartoonists, art teachers, and art historians. Papers or presentations might examine: the cultural significance of art objects created by Indiana women; the obstacles and challenges faced by women artists; women’s contributions to art organizations, schools, and museums; creating an identity as an artist; and the relationship between gender and the arts. Panels examining methodologies and challenges of doing history in the field of women and the arts are also encouraged.
Conference papers of approximately ten pages should be based on original research or a synthesis of scholarship. PowerPoint presentations or other visuals are strongly encouraged. Sessions will consist of two papers with time for audience discussion.
To submit an individual proposal, send a one-page explanation of your paper and a short biography (about 150 words). Panel proposals should include a one-page description of the panel which specifies the topic that each participant will discuss and a short biography for each participant. Academic, public, and independent historians, as well as graduate students, are eligible to present papers. All presenters must be present at the conference. The deadline for submitting paper and/or session proposals is December 1, 2017. E-mail submissions to npoletika@history.IN.gov are encouraged and will be accepted until the deadline.
For more information, call the Indiana Historical Bureau at 317-232-2535 or visit in.gov/history/hoosierwomenatwork.htm where you can also view papers from past conferences.
A $500 prize will be awarded for the best original scholarship offered by a presenter currently enrolled in a graduate program.
