Indiana Close Up Issue Essays
Indiana Close Up provides materials and a forum for Indiana citizens of all ages to learn about and participate in the democratic process through debate on selected contemporary issues related to the Indiana Constitution.
Essays and an introductory guide on Indiana and U.S. constitutional issues provide the basis for a meeting to be held by schools or community groups. Each essay focuses on a specific constitutional issue with historical context, some relevant Indiana court cases, pro and con positions, and a bibliography. The Introduction to Indiana Close Up describes the meeting format.
The meeting links the Constitution with issues currently in the spotlight and has been called a history lesson with a focus on the present and a civics lesson with historical perspective. Usually, three issue essays are the basis of the meeting.
Close Up materials are available for purchase and can be used in a classroom or community setting. We hope you will consider holding a mock constitutional convention, and we encourage you to purchase a classroom set of issue booklets and study guides for this purpose.
