BOAH > What's New > Hot Topics > Electronic Certificates of Veterinary Inspection Electronic Certificates of Veterinary Inspection

In 2005, the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) introduced Hoosier producers and veterinarians to the electronic certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI), or eCVI.

By incorporating digital-age technology into the traditional CVI-writing process, eCVIs make the reporting process simpler for veterinarians and producers, and improve animal trace-back efficiencies in a disease break situation.

BOAH recommends three different types of eCVIs.  All eCVI options can be signed and submitted electronically, eliminating the need to mail BOAH a paper copy of completed eCVIs.  The needs of your clients and capabilities of your clinic will help you decide which eCVI is the best fit for you.

Indiana's Electronic Certificate (IN eCVI)
Indiana's eCVI is a free, fillable pdf provided to any interested practitioner that is licensed and accredited in Indiana.  All you need to complete an IN eCVI is a computer and a copy of Adobe's free Adobe Reader software (http://get.adobe.com/reader/).  You do not have to be connected to the internet to create, sign, and print an IN eCVI, but you will need internet access to submit the IN eCVI to BOAH via e-mail.

Benefits of the IN eCVI include:

  • Creation of templates to reduce time to create eCVIs for repetitive movements
  • Same file can be used to create large and small animal papers
  • Most useful for veterinarians that do not have to list large numbers of individually identified animals on their CVIs
  • Appropriate for use by all veterinarians, but especially useful for vets that write a small number of CVIs each year

If you are interested in the IN eCVI, contact Kara Hammes at (317)544-2394 or kahammes@boah.in.gov. A BOAH representative will come to your clinic to complete a training on the IN eCVI for you and any staff that will help generate eCVIs.

Indiana's eCVI iPad App (iCVI)
The iCVI is a free app available for iPads only, through the Apple App Store.  The iCVI app is not currently available for iPhones or any Android tablets.  Indiana's iCVI is currently in the pilot phase of its development and BOAH is looking for veterinarians interested in testing the app and providing feedback.

Benefits of the iCVI include:

  • Easy creation of CVIs in the field, without the need for an internet connection -completed iCVIs will automatically submit to BOAH the next time the iPad connects to WiFi
  • Upload of IDs and other animal information from a spreadsheet
  • Allows digital images of the animal to be included
  • Same app can be used to create large and small animal papers

If you are interested in the iCVI, contact Kara Hammes at (317)544-2394 or kahammes@boah.in.gov. A BOAH representative will come to your clinic to complete a training on the app for you and any staff that will help generate iCVIs.
