Showing in Alternative Spaces

a room with a windowWhether it's a visual arts show at a local coffee shop, posting on an online gallery, or a dance performance in a park, art in places other than galleries and theatres is a strong component of Indiana's culture. It exposes people who would not typically attend a gallery opening or a performance to your work. It's in-your-face, in-your-backyard and seemingly edgy, even though it's been done since the beginning of time.

As an artist preparing to show in an alternative space, you first must find a venue that caters to your audience. This is where you are allowed to label people with their demographics, geographics, psychographics to determine if showing in the cafe around the corner will be an effective advertising tool. Go beyond your hometown if that's what is needed to reach your patrons.

Once you've decided where to show, spend some time and energy on making your presentation professional to maximize on your name recognition. This might include posters, banners, postcards, etc. If you are a visual artist, be sure to label each piece with your name, contact information, and price. Post an artist statement (who are you, special techniques, philosophy, etc.) to allow this potential customer base to connect with you on a personal level.
