February 5, 2013 Blog

This page has been created to help spread good advice and important information regarding safety and health developments in the Hoosier healthcare industry. Most of our blog posts should apply, in one way or another, to administration and management as well as frontline employees. After all, much of keeping our workforce safe and healthy relies on good, common-sense solutions. These kinds of solutions can keep people safe and healthy, while saving businesses money at the same time.

Why healthcare?

Quite simply, the healthcare industry is one of the state's largest employers with over 350,000 members and, according to the most recent worker injury and illness statistics, the non-fatal occupational injury and illness rate has remained high at 6.3. That means, approximately 6 of each 100 healthcare workers suffer an injury serve enough to require medical treatment each year.

While many people may not think healthcare is a high-risk industry, the rate of injury and illness in Indiana healthcare is currently 38 percent higher than the Hoosier construction industry and 17 percent higher than manufacturing – which are typically thought of as higher risk industries.

Over the coming months, we'll be covering best practices and good general advice to help keep Hoosiers safe in the workplace. If you have questions or suggestions for what you'd like to read about in the future, please contact us by email at insafe@dol.in.gov or by phone at (317) 232-2688.
