CE Requirements: RVTs

Continuing Education for Registered Veterinary Technicians

Registered Veterinary Technicians are required to complete 16 hours of continuing education in the area of veterinary medicine for biennial license renewal on January 1 of each even-numbered year. The next renewal date is JANUARY 1, 2028.

1. How many CE hours do I need to renew my registration?
RVTs must complete 16 hours of CE in veterinary medicine every two years. CE must be completed by January 1 of each even‑numbered year.

2. Do I need CE for my first renewal after initial registration?
No. RVTs do not have to complete CE for their first renewal period.

3. Can I carry CE hours into the next renewal period?
No. CE cannot be carried over. All required hours must be completed within the current renewal cycle.

4. Can I earn CE credit as an instructor or speaker?
Yes. You may claim actual presentation time, plus up to 2 hours of preparation time per 1 hour of presentation. Repeat presentations of the same material do not earn additional credit.

5. Can I get CE credit for writing articles or books?
Yes. You may claim up to 5 CE hours for time spent writing or researching a peer‑reviewed article or book on a qualified veterinary topic.

6. Does enrollment in a veterinary technician degree program count as CE?
Yes, if you were actively enrolled in an AVMA CVTEA‑accredited program during the biennium.

7. If I participate in an internship, can I receive CE credit?
Possibly. Internship‑related CE may be permitted as outlined in Section 5 of the rule.

8. Can CE taken for another state count toward Indiana’s requirements?
Yes. CE used to satisfy another state’s renewal requirements may also count for Indiana.

9. How do I report my CE at renewal?
You will certify completion of your CE during the renewal process.

10. How long must I keep my CE records?
You must retain CE documentation for three years after the end of the renewal period.

11. Is CE credit available for internships?
Yes. Applicants must submit the board’s internship CE application.

12. What are the CE requirements for veterinary technician internships?
The internship must include:

  • A structured curriculum with learning objectives and assessments
  • A didactic component (lectures, clinical rounds)
  • Supervised hands‑on skill development

13. Are online or asynchronous CE programs accepted?
Yes. CE hours are accepted regardless of delivery method or ability to interact with the presenter.

  1. What happens if I fail to comply with CE requirements?
    You may face sanctions under IC 25‑1‑4.

  2. Can CE completed after being audited count toward my next renewal?
    No. CE completed to fix an audit deficiency cannot be used for the next renewal period.
  3. Can I request a hardship waiver?
    Yes. The board may grant waivers according to IC 25‑1‑4‑4.
