Many motorcycle dealerships offer storage programs for customers. Riders can take their motorcycle to a dealership where their bike will be stored, maintained, and ready for the spring riding season. Contact your local dealership and ask if a storage program is offered.
Self-Storage
If you choose to self-store your motorcycle, it’s important to consult your motorcycle owner’s manual to determine the best way to store your bike. You’ll also want to follow these basic tips when storing and maintaining your motorcycle in the winter:
- Storage Location - Store your motorcycle in a dry, ventilated environment. A motorcycle cover is always a good idea even when stored inside.
- Top off the Tank - Fill the gas tank with fresh gasoline and a fuel-stabilizing additive. Always follow the manufacture’s recommendation for fuel and additives.
- Check All Fluid Levels - It’s important to check all lubricant, brake, and engine fluid levels prior to storing your motorcycle and refill if necessary.
- Oil Change - Before storing your bike, change the engine oil and filter.
- Battery Check - Batteries should be cleaned or replaced prior to storing. It’s also necessary to check the battery voltage and consider installing a battery maintenance system.
- Check Tire Air - Fill tires to a proper pressure level and consider using stands to keep the tires off the ground.
